First try

I initially started with two 10Gtek G0101-SFP media converters and a set of ABL43-24-20D & ABL34-24-20D SFP modules. For my initial sniffing setup I also added a Y cable / splitter on the downstream, thus mirroring the communication from the OLT to the ONT. Adding an USB Nic on the other side, I had hoped to see at least something. But…
So why doesn’t it work? The media converter is based on a RTL8213B , which does ethernet! Sadly PON simply isn’t ethernet. Allowing multiple ONTs on the same interface, it uses time division multiplexing to allow all ONTs to communicate on the same fibre, going over a passive splitter using the same wavelength. And well, this isn’t ethernet.
